Given that half the population is under 18 years of age, education is a critical issue in Mozambique.
However, there are many reasons why children and young people are not able to receive adequate primary and secondary education. For example:
• insufficient numbers of schools and school vacancies means that not everyone can either start
or progress in their education.
• High numbers of students per class mean that pupils do not receive adequate attention and can
easily fall behind.
• Low numbers of trained teachers mean that not all subjects can be taught, or in sufficient depth.
• Lack of accountability and monitoring means teachers and students are able to take advantage
of a general climate of corruption in Mozambique.
The most common forms of bribery are money and sex.
The Just Education project was developed to tackle the issues of corruption
and injustice within the education system in Mozambique, in order to provide an
environment where young people can be encouraged to be all they were created
to be.
